SUBACO PEOPLE

An art unit based on Shinji Komiya.
Subaco People is a collection of multiple personalities with the potential of exponential growth.

subaco people

I am Subaco People, looking at the world through the glasses of the artist Shinji Komiya. At the end of last year, Komiya began suffering from an intractable disease called fibromyalgia whose cause and cure have not yet been found. Since then, Komiya has been worried that he would not be able to practice his art as he used to.

At that time, he met the members of Waraji Villa, a shared house where several university students lived together in Hakodate. Some of these students were entrepreneurs, some were active volunteer members, some were avid social organizers, and some were on a two-year leave from university to find something important at Waraji Villa. People are gathering from Sapporo and other prefectures, and they are engaged in various activities while searching for something beyond themselves.

In the spring, Shinji Komiiya refurbished the warehouse on the premises and created a workshop where the students can work with him. It is not only a place for him to teach them how to handle tools, but it is also a place for him to give them advice and to think together about how to realize the concept of their ideas. It was quite natural that Komiya and the students decided to form an art unit together. Then I, Subaco People, was born.

The Subaco Studio is a form of Komiya’s hope. It became the scene for experimentation and the practice of art. The Subaco Studio will have a great influence on his future activities.
